On 5th December 2023, the labour component of the Zantchito Programme presented a braille copy of the Capacity Building Training Manual for Labour Inspectors to the Minister of Labour Hon. Agnes NyaLonje to show its commitment to satisfy discrimination (employment and occupation) convention No. 111.
The Ministry has a labour inspector who is visually impaired. In the spirit of inclusivity and equal opportunities for people with disabilities advocated in labour administration, this manual serves to equally equip the inspector to be abreast with current knowledge on labour administration to enhance his competencies. This is a first and a paradigm shift in Malawi as all other capacity-building programmes that have been conducted since time immemorial were done without considering the need to resource the disabled person equally.
World Braille Day is celebrated each year on the 4th of January as a reminder of the importance of accessibility and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. This year’s theme underscores the commitment to creating a world where individuals with visual impairments are not only recognized but fully included in all aspects of society.
