Promoting Decent Jobs For Sustainable Economic Growth in Malawi
EU funded Zantchito skills for jobs programme seeks amongst other deliverables to promote development-oriented policies and laws in Malawi that support productive activities, entrepreneurship and decent job creation, particularly in the micro small to medium enterprises in line with Target 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that promotes sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
Decent job creation is an ambitious milestone of the Zantchito project meant to reduce poverty and achieve social justice through assuring better prospects for personal development, the protection of equal access to liberties, rights and opportunities and treatment for all workers at the workplace. Zantchito project will thus ensure the integration of the four interdependent pillars of decent work namely: rights of workers, social dialogue, social protection and job creation and promotion at all workplaces in Malawi.
Four pillars of Decent Jobs
Job Creation and promotion
- Promoting programmes and policies that enhance productivity and entrepreneurship.
Social Protection
- Promoting safe and healthy working conditions for workers, adequate rest periods, access to benefits like healthcare, pension, sick leave, maternity leave, vacation leave, compensation of occupational injuries and diseases among many others
Rights at Work
- Promoting labour standards, laws and policies at the workplace
- Promoting the rights of workers to just and favorable working conditions, days off, 8-hour working days, compensable overtime, non-discrimination, living wages for workers and their families, equal renumeration, freedom to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives, right to unionism, right to refuse work that exposes them to imminent danger and eradication of forced labour, child labour and worst forms of child labour among others.
Social Dialogue
- Promoting social dialogue at national level between the Government and its social partners (employer and employee representative bodies) through the business of the TLAC (Tripartite Labour Advisory Council)
- Promoting social dialogue at enterprise level through labour unions and workplace safety and health committees that offer a platform for worker involvement, participation and consultation on matters that affect their mental, physical and social well-being.
- Promoting workplace democracy where workers are allowed to freely join labour unions and negotiate their workplace conditions.

Zantchito moves to train journalists on labour
