Improvement of equitable and gender-balanced TEVET in Malawi
Component 1 of the Zantchito – Skills for Jobs Programme focuses on strengthening Malawi’s Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET) system. The initiative aims to improve skills development, enhance employability, and build a responsive, market-driven training ecosystem.
Strategic Focus
Through both strategic and delivery-level interventions, the programme seeks to align TEVET outcomes with Malawi’s development priorities, including the MW2063 vision of an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation. Skills development is recognised as essential for building a globally competitive workforce capable of driving industrialisation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
Equitable, safe and gender-based access to TEVET
The programme supports increased participation and retention in TEVET, especially for women and vulnerable groups, ensuring that training environments are inclusive and secure.
Improved quality, coordination and relevance of TEVET
Quality is enhanced through policy reform, private-sector engagement, and the piloting of Sectoral Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs). This ensures that training aligns with labour-market needs and emerging economic priorities.
Strengthened TEVET management and monitoring systems
The programme improves governance and coordination across TEVET regulatory bodies and training institutions, alongside increased engagement with private-sector actors to ensure relevance and sustainability.
